Review

LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian is the kind of content that can be really useful or a complete waste of time depending on your knowledge and interest in The Mandalorian as a product in general. If you are just looking to get some adorable Grogu time to lift your spirits, stick to rewatching the original series or The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026).

The story nobody asked for

The “adventure” of this special is a surprise birthday party for Mando (Gavin Hammon). Some bad guys try to crash the party at one point but are swiftly defeated by Mando, Grogu (David Acord), and their friends because *uses Vin Diesel’s voice* family. And just so that it is clear, “swiftly” means that this whole thing happens in less than 5 minutes of the 50 that the special lasts. What do they do with the remaining 45 minutes? That is easy: a recap of the whole show. You heard right, this whole special is just a recap. So, for the great majority of people who want to watch the film but cannot remember a single thing from the series: Behold! The answer to all your questions.

You might have noticed above that Mando, aka Djin Darin, aka “The Mandalorian”, is voiced by Gavin Hammon. That is right, not even a Disney+ ft. LEGO production has managed to offer Pedro Pascal enough money to voice his own character. Either that, or they just haven’t bothered with a good enough offer, just like they have nor bothered with a good enough story. If you decide to watch it, get ready to be riddled with expo without any love or shame about it.

The death rattle

But fear not; all the other characters are voiced by their original live-action actors. Meaning at least you will get some kicks out of hearing the supporting characters you may or may not remember and may or may not love. Sadly, that is about as much hype as you will be able to get out of this special.

Not even the surreal and hilarious humour that LEGO displayed on The LEGO Movie (2014) and a few other features since can be found on this special. The jokes are in-law style at best, cringe even by dad-joke standards and so dreadfully boring. In fact, the colourful, cheery setting only serves as further contrast to highlight how lame the dialogues are. Turns out, there IS a limit to how many times you can repeat the exact same jokes, and this special is definite proof of that.

All in all, LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian is the worst special to come out in 2026 so far. The competition has been intense, but unless something worse comes out in the next three months, this will for sure win the prize for the most unnecessary content made for Disney+.

Advice to take from this movie:

  • It is nice to have friends… especially if you are being hunted by random mercenaries.
  • Nothing like a cute baby to create a tight-knit community?
  • Believe it or not, there IS a finite number of times you can make a joke before it turns annoying.
