Review

You Are the Film is a wild comedy that pushes the boundaries of the fourth wall while jumping from one genre to another. It is a feature made for people who come to the cinema to have a good time. This work is part of Leiden International Film Festival’s “Bonkers! Competition”, a personal favourite as it has been packed with amazing, strange gems for people who know that cinema does not have to be serious in order to be good. Add to this the wonderful idea of giving a free drink to everyone coming to the morning screenings—a lovely gesture by Trianon—and you have got yourself the perfect festival experience.

Madoka (Marika Ito) is a playwright for a small theatre group that is trying to gain some reputation. She is encouraged to go watch a film as a way to gain inspiration for her latest play. Instead, she finds out that, to Kazuma (Kai Inowaki)—the main character of the film she is watching—she is the main character of the film he is watching. Neither of them wants to recognise that their lives are films. But eventually they have no other choice than to assume their realities and help each other out of their respective messes, which only grow crazier by the minute.

An interesting intro

The screening I attended had a thoughtful introduction by the director… Or so I deduce, since it was in Japanese and had no subtitles whatsoever. There was a thick silence in the room—born from pure confusion—that turned into a resounding applause for the speech nobody understood. Quite the perfect starter for a chaotic comedy such as this one.

Suffice to say, the story is wonderful. Once you think you have got the hang of it, it changes over and over. This happens until you truly embrace the chaos and decide to roll with whatever is thrown at you. In a way, that narrative anarchy reminds of improv groups or creative projects with friends. No new idea seems to have been discarded, but rather they moulded the script to fit all of them. Even when they make no sense together at first glance. This vibe of acceptance and creativity reaches you as you are watching it, making your day a little brighter.

Face, face, face

As for the comedy itself, it is quite distinctive and mostly based on “the WTF factor”. A series of ludicrous events that will have your head spinning. Enjoyable as this is, there is one element that does spoil the story a bit, although it certainly works in favour of the film for certain audiences: exaggeration.

While Ito shows that she is indeed a talented actress, she starts her adventure with insanely exaggerated gestures. That might be the result of trying to enhance the comedy and make people laugh, but it does not really work too well. Neither do the annoyingly exaggerated facial expressions and movements of Kazuma’s bandmate and the main goon. Both of them take every single intake to the extreme, and more often than not it irks more than anything.

All in all, You Are the Film is a really imaginative feature that will provide you with a little over an hour of fun. If you like extremes in comedy, your laughter is guaranteed. If you do not, you will still have a nice time thanks to the great storytelling and the feel-good atmosphere of the movie.

Advice to take from this movie:

  • Sometimes the best advice comes from the most unexpected of sources.
  • You are not obligated to clean up somebody else’s mess just because you work together.
  • If you want to be told a harsh truth, a stranger might be a better choice than a friend.
