Shotgun Commentary: an interesting attempt at something.

Review

The Last Grail Hunter is…something. Something being a low-budget project funded by Raindance that has produced a dystopic sci-fi film… maybe. The feature, while made with a lot of heart, does need a bit of work in terms of story. The final look is as expected from a film made with no budget or professional editing, but it is endearing if, unlike yours truly, you know what you’re getting into.

A bold intro

If you don’t, no worries! The initial credits will make it abundantly clear for you. Between the CGI quality, the epilepsy-inducing effects, the jarring colours, and the letter font, the film lays out its identity from minute one. Punching you in the face with it so unapologetically, you can’t help but admire it.

During these credits, you get a ton of expo that turns out to be completely irrelevant to the actual film. In fact, without it, the movie would probably gain some mystery and eeriness to it. Nevertheless, the fact is it exists, and it mentions an “Arcadia 2031” which, despite the Greek origin of the word, it might make zombie lovers think of Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010). Sadly, no zombies are involved in this crazy ride.

What you will find is a strange story where a man and a kid play a video game with a character, Johnny (John Altman), writing prompts for him to do. This character’s life is connected to the of the man, so his survival depends on playing properly. A quick look on IMDb will also inform you that the kid, played by Johnny Raven, is also Johnny. They are all Johnny, which only makes the events in the movie more confusing.

The setbacks

While there is always the chance that you watch a movie you simply don’t have the ability to fully comprehend (Mulholland Drive, 2001, comes to mind), this does not seem to be the case. The story is quite simple, yet it requires an inordinate amount of effort to follow properly. This denotes a dire need for further work in both writing and direction, as the idea simply doesn’t translate as smoothly as it should, taking away most of its potential. Instead, it seems more like an awkward version of the video game storyline in Netflix’s 3 Body Problem (2024 – present).

It is also a must to acknowledge two obvious issues in the feature itself. One, the sound recordist that shows up very obviously during a scene. For a person who never sees that kind of error, seeing this type of slipup is both sad and exciting. Sure, it is technically a problem, but how fun is it when it happens and you see it? As for the second issue, it was completely avoidable with a five-minute research. Why would you make your character use a tarot card if you are not going to bother getting the actor to use it properly? Instead, it just looks like a very awkward person who’s being introduced to the concept of cards for the first time.

All in all, The Last Grail Hunter definitely has some issues. It is an alright attempt at something, but definitely needed a lot more work and rewrites to become what it was meant to.

• Sometimes less is more when it comes to special effects.
• Expos are overrated.
• When an actor gets lost, it shows. Don’t let your actors get lost.
