Review
The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie is the latest Looney Tunes adventure, protagonised by Porky Pig and Daffy Duck. Filled with exaggerated violence to keep it on brand, but with enough modern references and twists to cater to the younger audiences.
This feature follows Daffy (Erik Bauza) and Porky (Erik Bauza) from the moment they were adopted by farmer Jim (Fred Tatasciore) until the moment they face an alien invasion that threatens to take over their home, town, and planet. I know what some of you might be thinking, but no. Sadly, Marvin the Martian is not featured in this film.
The content
Great losses aside, the film has all the ingredients to keep young and old glued to the screen for the hour and a half that it lasts. I was a little worried watching the trailer, as most of the jokes featured in it seemed to be sexual double entendres. While one appreciates a dumb double entendre from time to time, it hardly seems on-brand for the Looney Tunes to be constantly making that type of joke.
Sure, they’ve always slipped some jokes for adults discreetly into their stories, but not nearly with the high frequency that the trailer hints. Luckily, those jokes are literally all the double entendres of this nature featured in the movie. So, while they may seem a lot for a short trailer, they do not amount to much when spread throughout the film. One can’t help but miss when they were less on the nose, but at least they are not tedious by any means.
Entendres aside, the general humour of the film is quite uninspired, albeit not annoying. You might not laugh much, but younger audiences and fans of the obvious jokes will. As for the plot, it is surprisingly fascinating to follow. Sure, some bits are predictable, and the final twist, while unexpected, makes most of the feature wildly foolish. But those details don’t really spoil the experience of what otherwise is a pretty enthralling adventure.
The talent
For those of you who didn’t know or didn’t notice while reading this review: yes, the same person voices the two protagonists. Bauza has an extensive filmography as a voice actor, and it shows. Never in a million years would you think that it is the same person doing Daffy and Porky, but here we are. Sadly, this also means that the biggest plot twist for a lot of people will be in the credits rather than in the movie.
Last but not least, it is important to mention that the soundtrack is absolutely fantastic. The use of classics in key moments of the film really makes the whole thing come together beautifully and enhances the viewing experience by miles.
All in all, The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie is pretty much what you expect. It won’t blow your mind with crazy, never-seen-before twists or anything, but it’s certainly a good time. For those of you who are already fans, it is a good addition to the repertoire, and for those who haven’t seen Looney Tunes before, it is not a bad introduction.
Advice to take from this movie:
- You can always rely on the Looney Tunes for some mindless entertainment to brighten your life.
- Never be the first to try a new flavour of chewing gum.
- Never gift a sledgehammer to a child.
