Review

His & Hers is the best series in the Netflix catalogue, surpassed only by Dracula (2020), and definitely the best Netflix original series to date. It knows what it wants to say, and it ends when it has to end. American series producers, please take notes. Not all good things need to be milked until there’s nothing left to love. Ending shows does not end the world.

The series follows Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal) and Anna Andrews (Tessa Thompson). They are a couple who have been separated for a year for reasons unknown at the beginning of the show. He is a detective and she is a reporter. Both investigate the same case, one with a victim they both knew and reasons to kill. The case untangles alongside their exploration of their relationship and the reasons why they separated. If you are a big fan of gossip and murder, this combination will prove particularly satisfying thanks mostly to the incredible script.

As you might have guessed by the title—or learnt through the trailer—this show is all about perspective. Who knows what is important, sure, but how they know and how they have experienced certain moments is the actual key to the mystery. Naturally, you have the two main POVs—Jack’s and Anna’s—but you also have a lot of fascinating secondary characters who play a part in what happened and remember the past in very different manners. Only when you have absolutely all the stories from past and present can you unravel the truth. And that is pretty much when your mind explodes.

The cherry on top

Now, read easy; there will be no spoilers in this review, as spoiling this work of art should be a crime. Still, certain things need to be acknowledged. Starting with how not even the ending is actually the ending. There has not been a “doughnut hole in the doughnut hole” narrative so beautiful since Knives Out (2019). It is probably one of my favourite approaches to the mystery genre, and it is without doubt among the most satisfying kinds of narrative to watch.

Still from His & Hers (William Oldroyd, 2026).

In His & Hers, this second doughnut hole is not only brilliantly written, but it is so gorgeous it will make you cry and your hair stand on end. Part of the credit for the power of this ending has to go to the soundtrack—the track “Love is Relentless”, by Mac Quayle—which is amazing throughout the show, but absolutely killer in this ending (pun unintended).

Last but not least, a small mention to the cast. What. A. Cast. It is hard to tell who to highlight among the never-ending parade of talent that is this cast. Bernthal knocks it out of the park, and Thompson commands your attention like nobody’s business. If you are used to watching things while being on your phone, say goodbye to that tradition. Your eyes will simply not be able to look away for a single second.

All in all, His & Hers is the type of show I will never get tired of recommending to anyone and everyone. This is the kind of story that reminds you why you love to watch series. Why it is still worth it to browse the infinite catalogue of platforms like Netflix.

Advice to take from this movie:

  • Communication is key in a relationship, even if it hurts.
  • Revenge is not a bad word.
  • Patience is everything.
