Shotgun Commentary: deliriously strange footage with an unexpectedly hypnotic quality.

Review

God Teeth is a one-hour film made out of found Internet footage. It tells the story of a group of lost souls trying to find their way into the afterlife. The editing is strange, so are the images, and even the subtitles. Everything makes it hard for you to follow the story, yet it also presents a challenge that is hard to back out from.

Odd storytelling for an odd story

The story is simple enough, a group of souls tells you their life story, with emphasis on the events that led to their deaths. They do so while running away from… Rays? On a boat. The souls, that is, not the rays. Their goal is to tell you their stories before the rays get to them and eat their memories… Their soul? Something like that. It is a little hazy on that area, but the point is, they won’t be able to go into the afterlife.

It is fascinating to see a brand-new story be born from recycled materials. Other works like From My Cold Dead Hands (2024) have done this before. However, this feature is completely fictional, posing the extra challenge of finding random content and making something coherent out of it, rather than picking a theme and grouping it to make a point, like the aforementioned title does.

The imagery chosen here is beautiful but completely random in origin. It is only thanks to the narration that you understand how everything is connected. Gorgeous images become haunting, fascinating views turn stressful… Everything gains a brand-new meaning, making this the most beautiful form of content recycling.

Narration and highlights

As for the narration itself, the text is quite hard to follow at first due to the format of the recordings and the way each character speaks. Some words are jumbled, and the subtitles have a particular font that makes them harder to read than usual. Overall, it is an absolute challenge to follow the tale despite its simplicity.

Luckily, as minutes go by, you begin to get used to the distorted narrations and the odd font of the subtitles, as well as into the story itself. The more context, the easier it is to follow. The name of the game is trust. Just let yourself be guided by the filmmakers and everything will be alright.

For better or worse, this is a unique experience. One with incredibly original stories and backgrounds for the characters. Contexts that don’t give you a lot of specifics, but do offer all the essentials to trap you into caring and encourage you to fill in the gaps as you please.

One of the most remarkable chapters of the story is the explanation of the peril that the protagonist souls are in. In order to explain how the rays could prevent them from going into the afterlife, the film uses footage from the underwater exhibition EARTH WORKS. An art installation that is haunting on its own, but becomes positively frightful with the invented backstory that the feature adds to it.

All in all, God Teeth is the perfect example of what happens when you have a ton of creativity and a bunch of time to surf the internet. Who said you needed a big production budget? You just need to search and consume hours of online content, and you’ll be able to produce your own film!
